From 21st April to 3rd May the base camp is in Trento
This year the 57th TrentoFilmfestival is full of interesting cinematographic events – from author documentaries, to news reports and fiction. The film contest will open on Saturday 25th April with the silent film: Erich von Stroheim’s masterpiece, Blind Husbands, dated 1919, screened with the live musical accompaniment of “I Filarmonici di Trento” Orchestra.
Among the 43 films in contest at the 57th TrentoFilmfestival is the film directed by Madeline Piujuq Ivalu and Marie Helene Cousineau Before tomorrow, straight from the Sundance Film Festival. It is a story set among the most isolated Inuit population in the Arctic region and tells of their difficult relationship with the white men and their uncertain survival in the extreme environment of this fragile community. After the multi-awarded success of Il vento fa il suo giro the director Giorgio Diritti presents his new documentary Piazzàti (minàas fitàas) shot in the Occitan Valleys of Italy and France and dedicated to “rented” children, a common practise of poor families in many Alpine valleys.
TrentoFilmfestival presents its mountaineering fans with the film Karl by Valeria Allievi. It is a documentary about the South Tyrolean mountaineer Karl Unterkircher who tragically died in July 2008 during an attempt to climb the inviolate face Rakhiot of the Nanga Parbat. The audience will be able to choose from among a wide variety of films that are not submitted in the competition: I recuperanti will be screened in homage to Ermanno Olmi – winner of the Golden Gentian in1959 with Il tempo si è fermato – and in memory of Mario Rigoni Stern , recently deceased, who wrote the script for this film. During the first days of the festival, the section Eurorama will present films from the major ethnographic festivals. From Saturday 25th April the “Parco dei Mestieri”, situated in the beautiful archbishopric garden, will open to the public exclusively for the TrentoFilmfestival with an initiative for the schools and citizens of Trento.
At TrentoFilmfestival you can meet the protagonists of great mountaineering of today and yesterday, and of extreme adventures in wild nature. The programme offers some unmissable appointments with: Patrick Edlinger and Chris Sharma, the climbers who made the history of Valle del Sarca and its walls famous worldwide, the history of Cerro Torre and the homage to Riccardo Cassin and Bruno Detassis. On Saturday 25th, that is on the opening weekend, the extraordinary performances of the Speed Climbing World Cup.
This year MontagnaLibri, the International Mountain Books Festival, will open the large exhibition areas in Piazza Fiera prior to the TrentoFilmfestival, on Tuesday 21st April. On 1st and 2nd May MontagnaLibri will host the 14th Fair of the Antiquarian Bookshops specialising in mountains. And then a rich schedule of Meetings with the authors, presentation of new publications and special events such as literary marathons, readings at night and music recitals in some of the most prestigious locations in town, from Palazzo Calepini to Palazzo Roccabruna, to the charming archaeological sites of “Tridentum romana” (Ancient Roman Trento). Protagonists of these meetings will be Piergiorgio Odifreddi, Gian Antonio Stella, Lorenzo Cremonesi, Reinhold Messner, Kurt Diemberger, Marco Aime, Sylvie Coyaud and Paola Lugo. On the occasion of this exhibition the literary prize, 38th ITAS Prize for the Mountain book will be awarded: the “Cardo d’Oro” is its most prestigious prize and this year it is dedicated to Mario Rigoni Stern, President of the jury for this prize for several decades.
