The “Duca degli Abruzzi” National Mountain Museum, in association with the Trento Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Handicrafts and Agriculture, and the Piedmont Regional Government, has organised this exhibition of about 300 mountain-theme luggage labels from 1890–1960.

The labels, which hotels gave to their guests, are part of the Museum’s wider collection of 1300 pieces and take visitors on a journey through developments in both society and tourism.

In their seventy-year history, these labels portrayed the vicissitudes of a complex, chaotic world. Indeed many of the major hotels that commissioned them were forced to close, or to change business, by the two World Wars. The label scenes, from the very first until their disappearance, varied widely and were regularly changed. Luggage labels were the main source of hotel advertising for many years. They depicted a whole host of figures, including concierges, pin-up girls, golfers, skiers, climbers and tourists, each presented according to the fashion and culture of the time. The style and features of the labels were also typical of this type of advertising, and the hotels stood in the foreground with the mountains behind.

The labels on display, as well as those in the catalogue, are grouped by geographical area, but are also dated. The majority of this collection is devoted to the Alps, but mountains from Europe and across the world are also featured in this fascinating insight into mountain life.
