Exhibition > Overland

Overland was launched in 1995 by Beppe Tenti. The aim was to paint a portrait of the Earth by exploring its remotest corners in four Iveco ANW 330.30 trucks; on the way, a television diary was recorded and then broadcast by Italian State channel Raiuno over 115 episodes. The figures behind Overland are staggering; it has made 11 expeditions in 11 years and travelled more than 252,000 kilometres (about six times the Earth’s circumference) in over 1100 days across 107 countries, through every type of natural environment and climate.

The first leg of this journey, from Rome to New York, was successfully accomplished in 1996; attention then turned to the New World (New York, Tierra del Fuego, São Paulo), which Overland 2 crossed from one end to the other in 1997. The third leg, Overland 3, took place in 1998 when the convoy ventured to Africa and then returned to Europe. The adventure continued in 1999 with Overland 4 and 5 when the four trucks successfully travelled across Asia. Overland 6, which was a journey through the Mediterranean, was completed in 2002. Overland 7, the return to Siberia, was achieved in 2004; Overland 8 set off on its rediscovery of the Americas in 2005; and Overland 9 crossed three continents in 2006. In 2005, Overland 10 saw the expedition change vehicle and the team pedalled their way from Como, Italy, to Beijing, China. Two years later, the transport changed again; this time it was the turn of the 100-year-old Itala, which won the first Peking to Paris motor race in 1907. This vintage car came out of the museum where it was on exhibition to retrace its steps after a century, but this time from Paris to Beijing.

The eleven Overland expeditions have been turned into a travelling photography exhibition that has been set up inside one of the legendary orange trucks. The exhibition, by Overland and Energia e Sorrisi, also includes a section on Morocco, taken from the book Cuore Tuareg by Luciano Covolo.

The Overland truck will be parked in Piazza Fiera from 29 April to 9 May.
Open from 10 am to 8 pm.
