Five unmissable events for mountaineers

During TrentoFilmfestival you will meet the protagonists of past and present great mountaineering, and of extreme adventure in wild nature.

This edition indeed includes five unmissable events: with Patrick Edlinger, Chris Sharma, Riccardo Cassin, the mountaineers whose exploits will go down in the history of the Sarca Valley, where the faces are world famous And, there is also the legendary Cerro Torre.

Meet Patrick Edlinger – homage to Patrick Berhault – 29th April, at Auditorium S. Chiara
By using videos and photos from his extraordinary ascents undertaken without any protection, Patrick Edlinger has done more than anyone else to launched sport climbing in media.  He is the special guest and has been asked by the festival to pay homage to a great mountaineer and Festival friend Patrick Berhault. It is five years since his tragic death on the Dom peak and on this occasion, the documentary film Berhault, by director Gilles Chappaz, will be screened. It traces the career of this extraordinary protagonist, beloved by generations of mountaineers and climbers, with contributions and the recollections of people such as Patrick Edlinger, Laurent Chevallier, the director of his films, and of Philippe Magnin, his last rope partner.

Mountaineering night with Chris Sharma – 29th April, at Auditorium S. Chiara
This is an unmissable event for sport enthusiasts: meeting the 28-year-old Californian Chris Sharma from Santa Cruz, a real wonder boy (starting when he was only 12), the winner of American Sport Climbing Championships when he was 14. Specialised American media nicknamed him ‘Monkey boy’, for his astonishing way of climbing, the artlessness of his movements and dynamic acrobatic style. He expresses his technique and his gift in two singular disciplines, bouldering and deep water soloing - climbing cliffs without safety aids where the water beneath becomes the safety net. He has tackled these disciplines, concentrating on and exploiting new age techniques. Hosted by Kay Rush.

Cerro Torre Night. The paper howl – Thursday, 30th April, at Auditorium S.Chiara
56 years of ice, passion, and stories about a mountain too long considered ‘impossible’. A night to tell of the passion of several mountaineers who dedicated their best efforts to Torre. Not strictly a mountaineering night, nor a night searching for absolute truth, but an appropriate and fair tribute to a symbolic place, where several generations, different schools of thought, unforgettable feelings and adventures have crossed.

Homage to Riccardo Cassin – 1st May, at Sosat
This year, TrentoFilmfestival will also pay homage to the great Riccardo Cassin, honorary member of the Trentino Festival, who celebrated his 100th birthday on 2nd January. The relationship between Cassin and TrentoFilmfestival dates back to the origin of the festival, which welcomed his return from important expeditions and followed his impassioned speeches during international mountaineering events, in the framework of the Trentino festival. There will be a photographic exhibition, a literary event and a retrospective of films about him, shot by several directors.

Mountaineering Night - Sarca (R)evolution – 1st May, at Auditorium S. Chiara
Not far from Trento city, the faces of this glacial valley have become a real climbing paradise in recent years and now attract climbers from all across the world every year.
Thanks to local mountaineers, who had a new vision, the history of these faces dates back exactly 30 years. Theirs was a ‘new morning’. Later, in the early 1980s, a group of really great climbers like Manolo, Hainz Mariacher, Luisa Jovane and Roberto Bassi moved to the small crags near the town of Arco and the sheer crags around Lake Garda. There, sport climbing has become an ever-increasing activity and tourism, attracts the best climbers in the world, thanks to well known events such as the Rock Master in Arco. More and more difficult new routes are opened on the crags in the area. During this night, the extraordinary and enthusiast Kay Rush will travel along the history of the faces of this vertical El Dorado in the heart of the Alps, together with several of its protagonists.
