At the top of the list: MontagnaLibri again

The 24 th international review of mountain publications

A “festival in the festival”. The international review of mountain publications, for twenty-four years the principle international showcase of publications featuring high lands, is preparing once again to “invade” the exhibition area of Piazza Fiera at the foot of the medieval city walls. From 29 April to 9 May the public will be able to browse through a thousand guidebooks, essays, monographs, photographic books and specialist magazines on environment, geology, archaeology, history, war, economics, art, crafts and ethnography, from a hundred publishers from all over the world (all printed in 2009 – 2010).

Besides the display of publications, which in recent years has come close to 15 thousand presences, the review proposes a rich calendar of literary events: meetings with the authors, debates with outstanding personalities, presentations of novelties, readings, exhibitions and shows giving an insight into diverse aspects of the mountains.
The review will open on 29 April with an “unabridged” reading of ‘Le vie dei canti’ by Bruce Chatwin. The day after, an unmissable meeting in which Irene Bignardi and Matthias Fanck will talk about the Bergfilm and its personalities, from Luis Trenker to Leni Riefensthal and Arnold Fanck, the filmmaker of ‘Der Heilige Berg’ (The Sacred Mountain) that will open the 58th TrentoFilmfestival.

An appointment of international importance with Claudio Sabelli Fioretti, who, on Saturday 1 May, will introduce the latest publication work of Wu Ming 2 ‘The way of the gods’. Double appointment on Sunday 2 May, in the afternoon with Susanna Tamaro who will talk about her book for children ‘Il grande albero’ and in the evening the literary and musical event ‘Il sacro e la montagna’, in which the personalities on stage will be Giuseppe Cederna and Mauro Corona.

The meetings with the authors, Emotions among the pages, will continue on 3 May with the presentation of Franco Brevini’s latest book ‘La sfinge dei ghiacci’. In the evening on Tuesday 4, there will be a special musical reading of “Other mountains, other worlds” based on the book by John Vink. With Il contrario del sole by Carlos Solito, on 5 May, we will discover underground explorations, and in the evening, a special guest, Marco Paolini, will converse with Francesca Melandri, authoress of ‘Eva dorme’ fresh off the press.

With ‘Cuore Tuareg’ by Luciano Covolo, Massimo Belluzzo and Luigino Del Pozzo, on Thursday 6, we will visit Marocco, and the subject of the literary appointment the following morning will be the Himalayan chain in the presentation of the Italian edition of ‘La corona dell’Himalaya’ by the Polish alpinist Krzysztof Wielicki.
After pedalling for seven years through various continents, Claude Martaler will tell us about his adventures in a conference in the room of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Trento e Rovereto on 8 May. In the
afternoon the meetings will end in grand style with “Yo valgo, yo puedo, yo voy a perder el miedo”, the journey to Guatemala with Syusy Blady.

In the final weekend, on 6 and 7 May, MontagnaLibri will also host the 15th Exhibition-Fair of Antiquarian Mountain Books, a unique opportunity to browse, consult and buy old and precious mountain books, postcards, photographs, prints, incisions, posters and rarities linked to the practice of alpinism. Furthermore, for the whole of the event, MontagnaLibri will host MontagniLandia, the play area entirely dedicated to young readers and the Libreria della Montagna, the book shop of classics and new publications of literature in this field. MontagnaLibri also offers an occasion to discover some of the most beautiful and attractive places in the city of Trento, exceptional locations for the literary appointments, from Palazzo Calepini to the archaeological areas of the Tridentum Romana, from Palazzo Roccabruna to Palazzo Lodron.
